Recently, I wanted to get an idea about the ideal bathroom sink size for my bathroom space and needs. So, I did a lot of research on standard sink sizes and in the process learned a lot about them. I would like to share them with you here, so you know the specifics prior to buying the best bathroom sink.
What are the standard bathroom sink sizes and dimensions? In general, standard oval and round bathroom sinks have a diameter of 16 to 20 inches and an average water depth of 5 to 8 inches. And standard rectangular sinks measure 19 to 24 inches wide (side to side) and 16 to 23 inches length (front to back). They also have a standard water depth of 5 to 8 inches. For an ADA compliant bathroom, the bathroom sink must be 30 inches wide, and 11 to 25 inches deep.
The size of the bathroom sink you get needs to correspond to its usages. Since you are planning to invest a considerable amount of money on this and expect to use it for a very long time, it’s important to get things right. So, let’s dive in!
Standard Bathroom Sink Dimensions
When it comes to bathroom sinks, there are so many types of bathroom sinks available in the market. Common bathroom sink types include vanity and countertop sinks like drop-in sinks, undermount sinks, vessel sinks to standalone pedestal sinks and wall hung sinks.
Whichever sink type you buy, some overall size dimensions apply to them all. They are:
Small Sink Size – Just large enough to wash your hands.

Large Sink size – Largest sinks. Can use to wash your hair, some quick laundry washing or even bath a baby or pet. (Check our top large bathroom sinks list here)
Let’s have a look into sizes and dimensions of different bathroom sink types in detail below. You have the option to find a perfect sized sink in any type you prefer.
Undermount Sink Sizes
Undermount rectangular sinks commonly used in bathroom vanities and countertop sinks might vary from 16 to 24 inches in width and from 12” to 18” in depth. Actual interior bowl dimensions will be 1 1/2 – 2 1/2 inches smaller around the whole sink perimeter.
These sizes don’t mean the actual dimensions must be limited within the given number. But usually, undermount bathroom sink should not exceed 30” in width and 22” in depth.
Drop-in Sink Sizes
Drop-in or self-rimming sinks are the easiest to install. So they are very popular because you can just drop them into a countertop opening.
Drop in bath sink sizes range from similar to undermount like in the range of 16 to 24 inches wide and 12 to 20 inches from front to back. In these sinks, the rolled edges that allow the sink to be dropped down into a countertop opening also add to its overall size.
Pedestal Sink Size
The size of a pedestal sink varies based on your model and requirement. Pedestal sinks come with no cabinet or vanity. Therefore it will be ideal for cramped spaces.
If you check our best pedestal sinks page you will notice that the average size of standard pedestal sinks is between 22 to 24 inches in width, 16 to 20 inch in depth and 33 to 35 inches in height. These are the average dimensions for pedestal sinks. However, there are much smaller pedestal sinks like 14 and 12 inch width models for small bathrooms, etc.
The width applies to the distance from the front to the back of the sink. It varies between 19 inches to 24 inches.
Wall-Mount Sink size
If you are installing a wall-mount sink then you will have to set a separate tower to place the essentials. The dimensions of a wall mount sink can be shown below.
Width – 19 to 24 inches
Length – 16 to 23 inches
Depth – 5 to 10 inches
On the plus side, this will be ideal if you want a deeper sink than the usual. (As there is no cabinet underneath the sink.) You can do laundry and you can even give a bath to your pet if you like.
Generally, wall mounted and pedestal sinks overall dimensions go roughly around 22-24 inches wide and 6 – 8 inches deep.
Vessel Sink Size
If you want to go for a stylish sink, then a vessel sink will be ideal fit. The dimensions of a rounded vessel sink run between 14 to 20 inches in diameter and 4” – 7” in depth.
On the plus side, you can install a sink with a larger length and width but its depth is often only four to five inches. Therefore it will suit just enough to wash your hands, for facials etc. But sometimes tiny sinks might cause water splashing all over the vanity top.
Single Bathroom Sink Size
For a single bathroom sink, at least you should install 30-inch vanity. That will leave 4 – 5inches of space on the counter too. If you choose a pedestal sink or a wall mount sink with less enough counter space, you can always add a nearby tower for extra storage. I think it will maximize the space of your bathroom. If not, you can choose a 36 – 48-inch vanity.
Double Bathroom Sink Size
When you plan a master bath with two sinks, install at least a 60-inch wide countertop. But 72 inches or more is preferred.
When I designed my mather bathroom, I focused on two things.
- It should be spacious to give each person their own three to five inches on each side of the sink.
- Enough distance between two sinks. It should be at least 12 inches but not more than 30 inches. (Trust me, you don’t want to play bumping elbows with your partner when you are in a rush to work!)
When discussing bathroom sink sizes, especially single and double bath sinks, it’s hard not to talk about bathroom vanity sizes. So let’s have a look at common bathroom vanity sizes too.
Standard Bathroom Vanity Sizes
The most preferred bathroom vanity sizes are 24, 30, 36 and 48 inches width for single-sink bathroom vanities and 60 and 72 inches for double-sink bathroom vanities. Standard bathroom vanity depth is 21 inches and standard height is 32 and 36 inches.
The 24 to 48-inch vanities hold only a single sink. But they are large enough to comfortably hold even a large bathroom sink and have some countertop space to place your things. The larger and wider the bathroom vanity is, the more space you have to use the sink and keep all the things you need.
60 and 72-inch bathroom vanities are very wide and allow you to have two sinks side by side. These are perfect if you are planning to design a “his and hers” bathroom with double sinks. So these are often used in master baths and shared spaces to allow two people to do their morning rituals at once or get ready in a rush for office or an event.

*Quick Tip – With bathroom vanities, for practical purposes it is best to go either for a durable drop-in sink or an under-mount sink than a vessel sink type they require more space.
Corner Sink Sizes
Corner bathroom sinks are an efficient and space-saving type of sink. They are often used in bathroom or powder room corners.
If a corner sink base or corner vanity is used, you can use a normal oval sink or a special triangular corner sink. If the sink is triangular or rounded triangular in shape, their size is measured a little differently than a normal rectangular or oval sink.
A 33-by-22 inch sink will fit into a corner sink base cabinet that measures 36 inches on each wall. If you have a bigger cabinet base like 42 inches, you can fit in a sink size like 36 or 38-by-22 inches.
How To Choose Bathroom Sink Size?
Standard bathroom sink dimensions vary between a certain range. Personal preferences, space, and practical usage play a major role while choosing the right size of a sink. Before selecting the ideal bathroom sinks, I categorized my requirement under three subjects.
- Space Limitation of the bathroom and the counter-top
- User’s needs and type (height, and general usage)
- Faucet choices
1. Space Limitation of Bathroom & Countertop
You have to plan the spatial arrangement of your bathroom and decide the space you can spare for the sink.
For example, if it’s a kids bathroom, you have to be extra cautious when it comes to space, as it could be small. So you can choose a small pedestal sink which is 19 inches wide, 17 inches long and 5 inches deep. In a situation like this, you also have the option to go for a wall- mount sink or for a corner sink.
Then we have to have an idea about the counter space we require. If you have already installed the vanity, you have to decide how much space you want to place the essential items. Basically, the Width of the sink is determined by how much space is available on either side of the sink.
If your countertop is 22″ wide, you will only have room for a 16″ sink. If the countertop is 24 wide, you can select a larger sink. (oval shaped sinks) My personal opinion is that we should always leave 4″-6″ or more on either side.
*Quick Tip – If you are tight on space and yet want space, then you should go for an undermount sink. You will be able to use every bit of your countertop.
2. User’s Needs And Type
When you choose the right bathroom size, you have to be concerned about whether it fits the user’s needs. If you are hoping to use the sink for multiple purposes such as washing hair, facials and laundry then it will be ideal to go for a larger and deeper sink.
If you are planning to install a sink for public and common bathrooms, such as restaurants, offices, public bathrooms, the sink bowl has to be spacious. Therefore you must go for a larger size.
Then the ideal size of the bathroom sink depends on the type of its user. The height of the bathroom sink should be comfortable with the user’s height. So, you have to consider the depth of the sink to calculate the total height of the sink.

3. Faucet Choices
Generally, bathroom sinks come with one or three ready-made holes. If it has three holes the spacing can also be different to suit different 3 hole faucet holes. So you need to consider your sink faucet choice to make sure the sink you want has the correct number of faucet holes and spacing in-between.
*Tips – If you are replacing an existing sink, you will have to check with current vanity and counter dimensions as well as plumbing hookups.
How To Measure A Bathroom Sink?
How I measured my bathroom sink is that I began with the side-to-side width and front-to-back length of the sink with a tape. Then I measure the height and the depth. The height should be measured from top to bottom. To calculate the depth I measured from the deepest part of the sink to the overflow. ‘
If you are planning to go for around sink then you have to measure the diameter too.
If you want to have an undermount sink, you’ll need to measure the countertop space of your vanity. Then you can decide how large the sink can be. First, measure from the width of the countertop. ( Measure the distance from the front of the vanity to the back wall.) Then, measure the distance across the vanity to measure the length.
(Quick Tip – If you are planning to replace an old sink, it is easier if you remove the old sink first before measuring)

Will any faucet fit my sink?
No. Any sink faucet will not fit with every bathroom sink. Usually, there are few holes in the rim or the deck of the sink. So, measure the distance between the center of the far left hole to the center of the far right hole. Then you can choose what type of faucet will fit.
What is standard faucet hole size?
The standard faucet hole size is 1 3/8 inches (35mm) in diameter unless otherwise mentioned in specifications. But faucet holes can vary in size for some sink makes and models from around 1 1/4 inch to 1 1/2 inch.
Are all bathroom sink drains the same size?
No. The size of the bathroom sink drain goes from 1 1/4 inches (32mm) to 1 1/2 inches (40mm). 1 1/4 inches is the general standard and 1 1/2 inches and 1 3/5 inches are commonly used.

Weight depends on the material and its overall size. For example, a 24 x 16 x 7 1/2 wall hung ceramic sink will weigh about 90 pounds (41 kg). An 18-gauge copper 16” round sink will weigh about 8 lbs.
What are the standard kitchen sink sizes?
Small kitchen sink size is around 22-by-24-inches. Larger kitchens usually have two side-by-side sinks in 22-by-30 inches. Both styles are normally 8 inches deep.
