If your rough-in size is 10-inches, then you must buy its compatible toilet. But 10-inch rough-in toilets are not so common as 12-inch rough-in toilets and good information about them are also limited. I have some past experience with 10-inch roughin toilets. On top of that, I did more research and found some good, recommendable 10″ rough-in toilet models as well as some not so good models.

So what is the best 10 inch rough in toilet? My top pick for best 10″ rough in toilet is the Toto CST744EF.10No.01 Eco Drake 1.28-GPF Two-Piece Toilet (Link to its Amazon.com page #ad) It’s a high quality product with a very good flushing performance. It’s also an eco friendly, High-Efficiency Toilet (HET) that uses less water (only 1.28 GPF).

Toto Eco Drake looks nice too, though it would have been better if it had a fully skirted design. But most importantly, it has a very good reputation going by customer reviews online. Price is also affordable compared to the other top 10″ models listed here.

That said other 10 inch toilet models also have their merits. So lets look at them in details below in my 10 inch rough in toilet reviews. I was able to find lots of details, pros, cons and insight about the toilet models listed above. I’ve also sprinkled it with valuable tips and info for choosing 10-inch models depending on different needs and preferences. So, this post will be a valuable resource for anything about 10″ rough-in toilets.

TOTO 10 inch rough in toilets

My top pick 10 inch model is made by Toto. Toto is also the best toilet brand in the American market today. So lets have look at the few different models Toto has to offer those seeking a toilet for a 10 inch rough-in. Here are their toilets for 10 inch rough in size.

* Toto CST744SF.10#01 Drake Two-Piece Toilet, 1.6-GPF
* Toto CST744EF.10No.01 Eco Drake Two-Piece Toilet, 1.28-GPF
* TOTO Aquia 2-Piece 0.9/1.6 GPF Dual Flush Elongated Toilet

So Toto offers only two design models for 10″ rough. The Drake and the Aquia models. Out of these, the Toto Aquia used to be the most sold 10″ toilet because it’s a dual flush toilet. But these days the Aquia is frequently sold out in online stores and difficult to find.

Toto Drake 1.6 GPF is the next most popular and most sold Toto 10 inch model. It’s a good, solid toilet with very good customer reviews and ratings on Amazon and other stores. However, in my opinion, the Eco Drake with 1.28 GPF is better because it saves more water.

I think many people buy the 1.6 GPF Drake thinking that it will flush better with more water than the 1.28 Eco Drake. It’s a case of, is 1.6 or 1.28 toilet better? Few years ago most 1.6 toilets were better at flushing than 1.28 GPF toilets. But it’s no longer the case. Most 1.28 GPF toilets sold today flush as well as 1.6 GPF toilets or even better because of improved design and research efforts put into their construction. When I checked Amazon customer reviews both Drake 1.6 and Eco Drake 1.28 models have similar ratings and comments about their good flushing performance.

So buying either of the three Toto Models will give you a good toilet.

Kohler 10 inch rough in toilets

If you are a Kohler fan they have couple of models that fit a 10″ rough. They are:
* Kohler K-3889-0 Highline Comfort Height 1.28 GPF Toilet
* KOHLER K-3851-0 Cimarron Comfort Height Two-Piece Round-Front 1.28 GPF Toilet

Out of these, I think the best Kohler models is the KOHLER Cimarron Comfort Height Two-Piece toilet (Amazon link) because it comes with Aqua Piston Flush Technology. So it has a powerful flush and removes more waste with every single flush. The comfort height seat level also makes it easy for tall adults and suitable for bathrooms designed for those with disabilities.

10 inch rough in toilet Dual Flush

Toilets with dual flush mechanism allow you to use save water by giving you a half flush for liquid waste and using the full flush only for solid waste. So getting a dual flush 10″ toilet is great to save water and make your bathroom eco-friendly. After all, toilets account for nearly 30% of average home water consumption.

The most popular 10″ rough-in dual flush toilet is the TOTO Aquia 2-Piece 0.9/1.6 GPF Dual Flush Elongated Toilet (Amazon page link #ad) This is a very good toilet and flushes well. Online customer reviews and ratings on Amazon and other sites also indicate this is probably the best and frequently only dual flush 10-inch rough toilet in the market. However, this Toto Aquia 10″ rough-in is frequently out of stock everywhere, probably because of its high demand.

There is also another newer and more compact Toto Aquia dual flush. It’s the TOTO MS446124CEMG#01 Aquia IV WASHLET Elongated Dual Flush 1.28 and 0.8 GPF CeFiONtect Two-Piece Toilet (Amazon link #ad) This Aquia IV model comes as a 12 inch rough-in toilet. But it can be adapted to 10 rough-in with the separately sold TOTO TSU08W.10 adapter (Amazon link #ad). The Aquia IV model is smaller and sleeker looking than the 10″ Toto Aquia.

10 inch rough in toilet Elongated Bowl

Toilets with elongated bowls are designed to increase your total comfort. They give you more thigh support and have more space in the bowl to clean yourself after using it without touching the bowl or seat. So the most sold 10″ rough-in toilets are all elongated bowl models like the 10 inch Toto Drake, Toto Eco Drake, American Standard Colony and Kohler Highline.

If you are looking for an elongated bowl toilet, the best 10″ rough elongated toilet is the Toto Eco Drake (Amazon.com page #ad). It’s not only got an elongated shape but also uses less water (only 1.28 GPF), looks nice, flushes well, has a good reputation going by customer reviews online. It’s also got an affordable price compared to other top 10″ models.

However elongated toilets are generally around 2 inches longer than round bowl toilets, therefore not ideal for small baths or space-constrained situations.

10 inch rough in Toilet Tank

Most of the 10″ toilets are two-piece toilets, with seperatable tank and bowl. So if the tank or bowl gets damaged or cracked you can replace them separately. And for most models from popular brands we discussed here you can buy the same tank or bowl as a replacement. Some best selling 10-inch models have the toilet tank and bowl listed for sale separately in the brand website or on Amazon and other toilet selling websites.

For example, a quick search showed me that TOTO ST743E#01 Drake Tank only is available for sale on Amazon here #ad. This tank fits the best 10″ toilet model (TOTO CST744SF.10No.01 Drake Two-Piece Toilet) which we discussed above. It’s got over 50 Amazon customer reviews so far and is highly rated. So lot of people seem to be ordering the tank only too when needed.

I also found several American Standard 10 inch toilet tanks and bowls listed separately for sale for models like American Standard Cadet 3 and Colony models. (For American Standard 10 inch toilet tanks check here on Amazon.com #ad)

10 inch rough in Toilet Bowl

Same like the tanks, even 10″ rough in toilet bowls of popular models can be bought separately when needed. For example I found below two bowls of the top TOTO toilet models we discussed above listed to order separately in case you need the bowl only in future.

* TOTO C744EF.10#01 Drake Elongated Bowl (Amazon.com link #ad)
* Toto CT412F.10No.01 Aquia Dual Flush Elongated Toilet Bowl with 10 Inch Rough-In (Amazon link #ad)

However, in the case of less popular 10″ toilet models, it might be difficult to find the bowl or tank listed for sale separately on websites. In such cases, you might have to directly contact the company and try to get it.

9 inch rough in toilet

Sometimes in old homes or due to a construction mistake, you might find a shorter rough in than 10 inches like an 8 inch or 9-inch rough-in. If its a 9 inch rough in, you are lucky because couple of the 10″ models we discussed here also fit a 9-inch rough-in. The ten-inch toilet models that fit 9 inch rough in toilet size are;

* TOTO Drake CST744SF.10#01 Two-Piece Toilet, 1.6 GPF
* Toto CST744EF.10No.01 Eco Drake Two-Piece Toilet, 1.28-GPF
* American Standard Cadet 3 Round Front Toilet, 10-inch Rough-in

By checking each models specification sheets and customer reviews online I found that these 3 toilet models are designed to have a 1-inch clearance gap between the tank back and the wall when installed on an exactly 10 inches roughin. So they can also be used if you find yourself with a short 9 1/4 or 9.5 inch rough-in.

11 inch rough in toilet

Sometimes due to a construction or other mistake, you might come across an 11-inch rough-in. As no toilet advertises itself as 11 inch rough, in such cases I notice many people buy and install a 10 inch rough in toilet.

But if you need a 11″ rough in toilet, it’s better to get a 12 inch rough in toilet that fits an 11 inch rough in. (Just we discussed above, like some 10 inch toilets fit 9 inch rough in, some 12″ toilets fit 11″ rough ins.)

I did some checking a while back and found that the below 12-inch toilets can be installed on a 11″ rough.

* TOTO Drake Elongated Toilet CST744E (Amazon.com link #ad)
* TOTO Drake ADA-Height Elongated Toilet CST744SL (1.6 GPF)
* American Standard Cadet 3 Concealed Trapway Toilet (1.28 GPF)
* TOTO Eco Drake toilet (1.28 GPF

Getting one of these 12″ rough in toilets is better because if you install one of the 10 in rough in toilets on an 11 in rough in there will be at least a gap of 1 inch between the toilet tank and the wall. (Frequently the gap will be more as most 10 inch toilets leave a gap between tank and wall even on a perfect 10″ roughin.)

However, if you are decided on installing a 10 inch toilet on a 11 inch rough in the I found the model that will have the smallest gap is the American Standard 221CB004.020 Colony 2-Piece Elongated Toilet (Amazon link #ad) According to its specification sheet, this toilet leaves a 1/2 inch gap when installed on a exact 10 inch rough in. Its the smallest tank-wall gap I found among all the 10 inch models we have discussed here.

So in the case of a 11″ rough-in situation, the 10″ Colony model will leave a gap of 1-1/2 inches (1.5″). 1.5-inch gap is a noticeable gap to have behind a toilet tank but still won’t look weird and is passable.

10.5 rough in toilet

10.5 inch rough in size is another tricky rough in size where its difficult to find a good toilet model to recommend. Unlike for 11 inch rough ins, I couldn’t find any 12 inch roughin models that might fit a 10.5″ rough. So we’ll have to settle for a 10 inch rough in toilet that will have the smallest gap between the tank back and wall when installed.

After checking all the toilet model specification sheets of all 10 inch models I found the below 3 models to have the smallest gap when fixed on a 10.5″ rough-in size.

* American Standard 221CB004.020 Colony 2-Piece Elongated Toilet (Amazon.com link #ad)
* American Standard 270DB001.020 Cadet 3 Round Front Two-Piece Toilet (Amazon link #ad)
* TOTO Aquia 2-Piece 0.9/1.6 GPF Dual Flush Elongated Toilet (Amazon link #ad)

Out of these three, when fixed on a 10.5 roughin, the American Standard Colony model will have the smallest gap (1 inch) between tank and wall. The AS Cadet 3 and Toto Aquia will have a 1-1/4″ gap between wall and back of toilet. 1 or 1-1/4″ inch gap is pretty normal gap to have behind a toilet.

10 vs 12 inch rough in toilet

The reason why there are so few 10″ rough in toilet models available is that the standard rough-in size is 12 inches. So over 90% of toilet rough-ins in America are 12″ rough-in. Equally, 90% of the toilets sold in the US are 12″ rough-ins. It’s only the remaining 10%, mostly in older homes, that need a non-standard rough in toilet like 10 or 14 inch rough-in toilets.

Overall I estimate less than 5% of all toilets sold are 10″ roughin toilets. Looking at this stat, I think it’s fortunate we got some top brands like Toto, Kohler still making and marketing 10″ rough toilet. For example, in some toilet segments like small toilets, top brands like Toto, Kohler etc don’t make short depth toilets less than 26 inches in depth anymore. Still, many older homes and small bathrooms need 24, 25-inch depth toilets. In such instances, people are forced to buy from unknown toilet brands.

Final Verdict: My top pick 10 inch rough in toilet model is Toto CST744EF.10No.01 Eco Drake 1.28-GPF Two-Piece Toilet. (Link to its Amazon.com page #ad)
